What is the reason why you wake up in the morning? I bet most of you don’t have a good reason other than responsibilities.
Either go to school, work or take care of family business, we are consumed by the must-do things that we may have forgotten the reason behind all this effort.
Anything we do without a clear purpose to pursue becomes unsustainable. And with discomfort and routine arrives boredom. Long-term goals become unrealistic when we cannot survive the week.
How do we achieve the long timelines of any target? How do runners train for weeks for a 4-hour race or hikers months for an elevation gain record?
Achieving long-term goals requires strategic planning and unwavering determination. When embarking on any endeavor without a clear purpose, it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Without a meaningful purpose driving our actions, discomfort and routine can lead to boredom, making it challenging to maintain focus and commitment. Long-term goals can seem unattainable, especially when overshadowed by the struggles of day-to-day life.
To conquer the lengthy timelines associated with ambitious targets, we must first establish a clear and compelling purpose that fuels our efforts. This purpose serves as the guiding light through the inevitable discomfort and monotony that will arise along the way. By anchoring our actions to a meaningful objective, we can persist through the challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt.
Taking the example of runners preparing for a 4-hour race, their training regimen spans months and requires a meticulous approach. They break down their long-term goal of completing the race into manageable milestones, focusing on building endurance, speed, and mental resilience. Their training becomes a journey marked by progress and small victories, each step contributing to their overall preparedness for the race day.
In essence, achieving long-term goals necessitates embracing the journey rather than fixating solely on the end result. It entails breaking down the overarching goal into manageable tasks, staying connected to a clear sense of purpose, and persevering through the inevitable discomfort and challenges. Just as runners gradually build their physical and mental stamina for a race, individuals can cultivate the resilience and perseverance required to achieve their long-term aspirations.
What to do if boredom gets in the way of your goals?
There is not a simple recipe for this to work for everyone. However we can rely in similar steps to assess, adjust and act.
- Look for that purpose behind yor daily, even hourly activities.
- Responsibilities should also provide at least some advantages. Keep it objective and positive.
- Reorganize.
- Challenging and higher value first.
- Explode. Not you, your activities.
- Distribute in specific targets and with specific tasks. Keep it simple and challenging.
- Question.
- What is the value of those non-challenging activities? Are they still worthy?
- What are those activities that are no longer valuable?
- Adjust and repeat.
- Adjustments may involve research for changes, perhaps new challenges like unlearning, failing, and learning.
Whatever the adjustment process may be, keeping your vision always in perspective will give you certainty and purpose at any step. There is no place for boredom when chasing something valuable.
